What is Precision Engineering?

Precision engineering services have transformed modern manufacturing. It has enabled us to create complex, highly accurate mass-produced parts. There are two main types of precision engineering: CNC Milling and CNC Turning; they typically use CAM software to read digital drawings and instructions. This information is then fed to the computer that controls the machining process, which accurately cuts the raw material based on those specifications.

This field of work requires a high degree of accuracy, as even the slightest error can have enormous consequences. That is why we measure parts in microns, a thousandth of a millimetre; this ensures we take accurate measurements and guarantees the parts are correct.

What materials are used in precision engineering?

precision engineering tooling

Precision engineering is a highly versatile service that can be used on various materials, the most common being metal. Metal can be used for multiple purposes and sectors, including the aerospace, automotive, and rail industries.

Plastics are another common material used in precision engineering; they are often cost-effective and can be used for various purposes, including toy manufacturing, the food industry, and pipe fittings.

Metal and plastic are typically the most used materials in precision engineering; we can also use foam, as it is inexpensive, making it an ideal choice for test runs before using a more expensive material.

What are the advantages of precision engineering?

Accuracy

The CNC machines are designed to create accurate parts, repeatedly ensuring high quality and consistency. Precision engineering means that parts can be repeatably made whilst guaranteeing the same level of detail each time.

Reduced Human Error

CNC machining requires very little human intervention; it can create repeatable, accurate parts without the risk of human error. Once the machine has been set up, it requires very little supervision to run the job. This also helps reduce running costs by reducing the need for supervision.

Speed

Precision engineering is an ideal solution when fast-turnaround times are crucial. CNC machines can create high-quality products at speed without compromising quality or safety.

Reduced Waste

CNC Machines can use multiple tools on a single project, allowing for more accurate results when creating complex parts. Using the right materials and tools can reduce waste.

Versatility

Due to the nature of these machines, they can cut an extensive range of materials and thicknesses. They can easily cut highly customised and detailed parts.
