What is Stainless Steel Fabrication?

Stainless steel fabrication is the process of shaping, cutting, bending, and assembling stainless steel to create components, structures, or products. Stainless steel is ideal for applications in demanding environments due to its high resistance to rust and corrosion.

Why Choose Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is ideal for many projects due to its unique properties. It is corrosion resistant, strong and durable making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Its modern appearance and non-porous surface make it a popular choice for sectors such as food manufacturing and pharmaceuticals among others.

What are the most popular stainless steel grades?

The most popular stainless steel grades used are 304 and 316. 304 is a popular austenitic stainless steel that’s malleable and resistant to corrosion. 316 is another austenitic stainless steel which is tough, strong  and a great choice for welding.

Can stainless steel rust?

Yes, stainless steel can rust, however it is less likely to as it is more resistant to corrosion then mild steel. This is due to its chromium content. The chromium within stainless steel provides a protective oxide layer to the surface which prevents rust. This oxide layer regenerates if damaged making it highly resistant to rust.

Certain conditions can make stainless steel rust such as:

  • Exposure to chlorides (like saltwater or chloride cleaning agents).
  • In contact with high levels of oxygen and moisture for extended periods.
  • Exposed to extreme temperatures (which can break down the protective layer).
  • Damaged mechanically or scratched, compromising the protective layer.
