Meet our Responsible Welding Coordinator: Jayne Taylor-Whitticks – Magna Inspections Ltd

At D&M, we take pride in the quality of our work and strive to provide exceptional service to our clients. We do this by ensuring our welding processes are carried out to the highest standards. That’s why we are thrilled to introduce you to our Responsible Welding Coordinator, Jayne Taylor-Whitticks, European / International Welding Engineer and owner of Magna Inspections Ltd.

Magna Inspections Ltd was established by Jayne in 2006 and specialises in Welding Inspection, Non-Destructive Testing, Welder Qualifications, Welder Procedure Qualifications, Welding Engineering and Welding Quality Insurance. This includes any welding-related service, from investigating individual components for defects to supervising structural repairs. The company is based in Driffield, East Yorkshire.

Jayne has been working alongside D&M for just over two years and has extensive experience in the welding industry. Her experience in metallurgy and welding engineering made Magna Inspections Ltd the ideal choice for us. In 2012, Jayne won the main award at the Women of Achievement Awards, run by Women in Business Hull—a huge achievement in itself. As our Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC), Jayne ensures that any welding work we carry out under BS EN 1090 certification complies with the standard’s requirements. There are two main requirements of the standard: traceability and competence.

Jayne Checking the Welds with our welder Dan

One of Jayne’s primary responsibilities is ensuring that all our welders are properly trained and qualified for welding work. This includes ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to do their work safely and efficiently. As part of this, Jayne regularly visits D&M to conduct welder surveillance. During these visits, she monitors our welding procedures to ensure our welders follow them correctly and perform the welds to the required standard. This is an important aspect of our BS EN 1090 compliance and ensures that we maintain the high level of work we provide. Jayne also checks that the paperwork is correct – a technical review must be documented, and traceability should be evidenced via appropriate certificates for the materials and welding wire used.

All our welders are qualified in accordance with ISO 9606-1. At D&M, we have a wide range of approved welding procedures that cover our welders for multiple welding processes, material thicknesses, and material types, including stainless steel and carbon steel. These welder qualifications must be re-certified every 3 years by an external test body. To achieve this, Jayne witnesses the welders carrying out a specific weld procedure on a test piece. She performs a visual inspection and then sends the test item to a UKAS-accredited laboratory, which conducts destructive testing of the weld. This checks that the weld is structurally sound and has penetrated the material. If the destructive testing is successful, the welder’s certificate is reissued for another 3 years.

Jayne’s expertise and dedication to ensure we are meeting the BS EN 1090 standard helped us achieve BS EN 1090 recertification in October 2022.  We are delighted that our certificate was renewed for a further 3 years. We were then certified to Execution Class 3 in October 2025.  This certification is the industry standard for the fabrication and assembly of steel structures, and it is a testament to our commitment to providing exceptional service to our clients.
