When it comes to preparing metal surfaces for painting, coating, or restoration, sand blasting is one of the most effective and reliable methods available. This powerful cleaning process uses high-pressure abrasive media to remove rust, old paint, and surface contaminants, leaving materials clean, textured, and ready for finishing. Whether you’re working on industrial machinery, automotive components, or structural steel, sandblasting services provide a fast, efficient, and cost-effective solution for achieving optimal surface preparation and extending the life of your equipment or materials.

What is Sandblasting?
Sandblasting is an impact finishing technique that forces abrasive materials at high speed towards a surface to clean and smooth it. It is also used to remove contaminants, prepare surfaces for painting or change the overall texture of the material.
The Sandblasting Process
Here at D&M, we utilise an air-driven sandblasting process. For this process, you must prepare the part, mask any areas that don’t need to be sandblasted and then place the item into the sandblasting cabinet. The abrasive material is then loaded into the pressurised blast pot. We then use an air compressor to generate a high-pressure air stream. When the trigger on the gun is pressed, high-pressure forces the abrasive media through the blast hose and out of the gun’s nozzle. The abrasive media hits the surface of the part and strips away any rust, paint or contaminants on the part. Creating a clean and smooth finish.
4 Benefits of Sandblasting
Time Saving
Sandblasting is a quick process for removing surface contaminants, such as oil, grease, and rust, from metal surfaces. It is a great alternative to manual processes such as sandpaper and avoids using harsh chemicals. If you hire a professional company with the right equipment, the process is a fast way to clean up a part, saving you not only time but money too.
Prepares metal surfaces
Sandblasting is often used to prepare the surface for other finishing techniques, such as powder coating. The coating adheres better to surfaces that have been adequately cleaned and smoothed over, ensuring longer-lasting finishes on parts and smoother, more appealing results.
Removes Contaminates
Sandblasting easily removes contaminants such as oil, grease, and rust. These contaminants can affect the part’s longevity and cause other finishing processes to fail. The high-powered stream of air can easily get into nooks and crannies that other, more manual methods would find hard to, ensuring that all elements of the part are contaminant-free.
Less toxic and wasteful
It is a less toxic way of cleaning and preparing parts than using alternatives such as harsh chemicals. The only hazards to people are caused by the dust produced and the noise generated. The dust can be harmful when breathed in; however, if LEVS and RPE are used and correct protective clothing is worn, the user is protected from inhaling the dust. The noise created can damage your hearing, which is why it’s vital to ensure the user always wears hearing protection when blasting.
The media can also be reused, meaning it is less wasteful. It can be swept up and returned to the blast unit for reuse, creating a more cost-effective and recyclable process for cleaning parts. Any waste blast media can also be swept or vacuumed up for easy removal and disposal.

Applications of Sandblasting
Sandblasting has a variety of uses and can be used in a wide range of industries and sectors. We have compiled a short list of common sand blasting applications:
Remove rust and contaminants from metal surfaces—This is most commonly used to make surfaces suitable for new coatings.
To remove surface imperfections – it can be used to smooth over rough surfaces or remove imperfections.
Remove old coatings – an effective method of stripping away old paint, varnish and other coatings from the surface.
Create different surface textures – it can be used to create rough, textured or even smooth, matte finishes.
Cleaning of Equipment – Sandblasting can also be used to clean and maintain equipment, such as machinery.

Is Sandblasting Right for my project?
Sandblasting is a great option to ensure metal parts are cleaned correctly. It easily removes rust, contaminants, and imperfections and can create a smooth finish ready for your part to be powder-coated to a high standard.
