What are PEM Fastener Insertion Services?

This new machine enables us to provide cost-effective and reliable insertion services to new and existing customers. What is Fastener Insertion?

Fastener insertion is an important part of the fabrication process. It is the process of installing screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, or specialised inserts into a range of materials. Installing fasteners is done to help easily join two pieces of material together. They help by providing the necessary force to hold the pieces together and ensuring the job’s structural integrity.

What are PEM Fasteners?

PEM (PennEngineering® Manufacturing) fasteners are a range of fastening solutions designed to join different components together. They are known for their ease of installation, reliability, and efficiency. Various fasteners are available, including self-clinching nuts and standoffs, self-clinching studs and pins, threaded inserts, surface mount fasteners, threaded standoffs, and cable tie mounts.

How are they installed?

Fasteners are installed using an insertion machine; we use the Haeger 824 MSP 5e, which presses the inserts to the metal, securing them and creating a smooth flush finish to the piece.

Self-Clinching Fasteners

Self-clinching fasteners are designed to be pressed into a pre-drilled or punched hole in sheet metal. This causes the fastener to deform and clinch securely into place.

Stand-offs and Spacers

Standoffs and spacers are installed by placing them over the designated location on the metal. The machine then applies the right pressure to press the standoff or spacer into the securely seated metal.

Rivet nuts

Rivet nuts are placed onto the metal; the machine then compresses it to the sheet, causing the rivet nut to deform and grip the surrounding material securely.


The insert is placed onto the metal, and the machine presses it into place, securing it in place. The insert then provides a threaded or reinforced attachment point, as required.

If the fasteners are not correctly inserted, this can lead to weak joints, which may fail over time.
